Blessing the Children
960 boxes of Gleaner's Soup Mix (1.2 million meals) left our Warehouse in April with Compassionate Resource Warehouse heading to Blessing the Children Development in Kebele, Ethiopia! The dried soup base is mixed with water, spices and meat to create a delicious and nutritious stew. The children then have the option to eat it with rice or pasta. The food gets distributed among two schools, which teach over 2,000 students. Each student gets two meals a day (breakfast and lunch) and the Gleaner food also gets distributed to surrounding communities. Blessing the Children Canada’s mission is to improve the lives of children and impoverished families in Ethiopia by meeting their physical, social and spiritual needs. By lending a hand to BCDO Ethiopia, we are able to help provide education and community support. As a result, the people of Bishoftu, Ethiopia are empowered to create better opportunities for an improved quality of life. The food is given freely and received with great joy! This is given and the name of Jesus is front and center. New believers are being discipled – this is what happens when Compassionate Resource Warehouse, Fraser Valley Gleaners and Giving Hands partner in Kingdom purpose. AGM Report
On June 15th, 2021 we got together with 36 members and held our Annual General Meeting. This meeting was held with social distancing and wearing of face masks as mandated by B.C. Health. Dave Traub did the invocation and prayer. He shared some of his thoughts about dealing with Covid 19 and he was grateful for being given the task of calling volunteers and seeing how they were doing. We thank Dave for giving of his time in this ministry. Many were blessed. The Minutes and Financial statements dated June 27th, 2020 were accepted as presented. We listened to all the reports that the staff and the Board members are a part of and it was good to share this information with the members. Each year we have elections for Board members and this year Ed Klassen and Case Van Muyen were re-elected for another 2 year term. We also elected Don Sears and Jim Vriend as new board members for a 2 year term. We thank these members for being willing to give of themselves to Gleaners in this capacity for the next 2 years. After all the reports were accepted, Carl introduced Peter Breederland as our guest speaker. Peter was one of the first people to get involved in the establishing of Fraser Valley Gleaners. Many years ago he owned a pepper farm and it bothered him when he had to grade his peppers and the seconds were not good for market. He would have to compost them and he realized he had to think of a way to make good use out of all those peppers and not compost them. Along the way Peter was introduced to John Martens from Oliver Gleaners and that began the discussion of sending all those peppers and other vegetables gleaned in the Fraser Valley to Oliver. In the meantime, MCC owned the land that Gleaners currently sits on and werewatching what this group of people were thinking of doing. MCC then offered the use of this land for 15 years at a dollar a year. After that Gleaners bought the land at fair market value and a Fundraiser Campaign was organized, the property was paid off within a year. Peter, with several other volunteers who had a vision for Gleaners, became a member of the Board. The last 20 years have been years of seeing God’s goodness and faithfulness in this ministry. God is good! His faithfulness endures forever! |
